General Information

Ti-6Al-4V

Ti-6Al-4V is the nominal chemical composition of TC4. It refers to the mass fraction, Al 6%, V 4%, and the rest is Ti .The alloy composed of titanium as the base and other alloying elements is called titanium alloy.

Titanium alloy has the advantages of low density, high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, and good process performance.

It is an ideal aerospace engineering structural material.

Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) belongs to the national standard titanium alloy, and the implementation standard is "GB/T 2965-2007".

Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) has the advantages of both α and β titanium alloys, namely good plasticity, good thermal strength (can work at 400℃ for a long time), strong resistance to seawater corrosion, simple production process, can be welded, cold and hot formed, and can be strengthened by quenching and aging treatment.

It is mainly used in aircraft compressor discs and blades, ship pressure hulls, large-size forgings, die forgings, etc. Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) also has good low-temperature working performance. It still has good toughness below -196℃ and is used to manufacture low-temperature and high-pressure containers, such as liquid hydrogen fuel tanks for rockets and missiles.

① When measuring the elongation of materials with a width (W) greater than or equal to 1.6mm (0.063in), a gauge length of 50.8 (2in) or 4W should be used. The test results must report the gauge length. The elongation determination method for materials with a thickness less than 1.6mm (0.063in) can be ignored. As an alternative, the relevant gauge length of ISO 6892 can be used when the supplier and the buyer agree. (5.65 times the square root of S0, where S0 refers to the original cross-sectional area.) The gauge length should be reported together with the elongation value.

② The gauge length L0=50mm for elongation in the table, and the cross-sectional reduction is only applicable to plates.

③ The bending test is applicable to thin plates and strips.

④ The table shows the mechanical properties of annealed thin plates, strips and thick plates *The transverse requirement value is only applicable to products that can obtain tensile specimens of not less than 63.5 (2.5in) in length.

The differences between Ti6Al4V ELI and Ti-6Al-4V

Ti6Al4V ELI and Ti-6Al-4V (grade 5) both are typically used for medical implants. Ti6Al4V also has numerous applications in the medical industry. The biocompatibility of Ti6Al4V is excellent, especially when direct contact with tissue or bone is required. Ti6Al4V ELI (Grade 23) is very similar to Ti6Al4V (Grade 5), except that Ti6Al4V ELI contains reduced levels of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and iron. ELI is short for "Extra Low Interstitials", and these lower interstitials provide improved ductility and better fracture toughness for the Ti6Al4V ELI material. Ti6Al4V ELI (Grade 23) is a special characteristics biomaterial higher in biocompatibility (due to reduced levels of oxygen, nitrogen and iron) compared to Ti6Al4V, Ti6Al4V ELI is chosen ahead of Ti6Al4V.

6Al-4V ELI is one of the most widely used Titanium alloys in the medical industry. It is certified to ASTM F136, and commonly referred to as implant grade 6-4 Titanium. Its properties of biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, high strength, and toughness make it especially suitable for implants and other medical devices.

The main difference between Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Grade 23) and Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) is that in ELI (Extra Low Interstitials) the maximum oxygen content is lowered to 0.13%. This gives the material improved fracture toughness. Among it's main uses in the medical industry are Orthopedic implants, Bone and Joint Replacement, Dental root implants, Surgical Clips and Cryogenic Vessels.
